Three Afghans freeze to death attempting illegal crossing into Iran

(MENAFN) Three Afghan migrants froze to death while trying to cross into Iran in Herat province, western Afghanistan, local authorities reported Saturday.

A local army official, speaking anonymously, said the migrants died due to the extreme cold.

Another individual, a shepherd, was also found dead in the mountainous Kohsan area. The group had attempted to cross the border illegally on Wednesday but was intercepted by Afghan border forces. Searches conducted Wednesday night recovered the bodies on Thursday.

According to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), more than 1.8 million Afghans were forced to return from Iran between January and November 2025, most through coercion.

UNHCR noted that such returns “in adverse circumstances have strained Afghanistan's already overstretched resources and services,” creating “risks of onward and new displacement, including return movements back into Pakistan and Iran and onward.”

Amnesty International has urged countries to stop forcibly returning people to Afghanistan, citing “a real risk of serious harm for returnees.” The country is grappling with multiple crises, including the aftermath of two major earthquakes, climate vulnerability, and international sanctions, particularly over restrictions on women in employment and public life.

Humanitarian organizations report that over 17 million Afghans face acute food insecurity, compounding the challenges for returnees and residents alike.
