Syrian Army urges deployment of armed groups by YPG/SDF

(MENAFN) The Syrian military described the recent positioning of armed factions by the YPG/SDF in eastern Aleppo as a serious and risky development, cautioning that any hostile steps would trigger “a violent response,” as stated by reports.

In an official statement, the army’s Operations Command said, “We are conducting a direct and immediate assessment of the situation on the ground.” The command added that intelligence assessments indicate the incoming units include fighters linked to the PKK as well as elements associated with the former regime.

Emphasizing its stance, the command declared, “We will not stand idly by in the face of this dangerous escalation.”

According to military sources, additional Syrian Army units have been dispatched and positioned at key locations in Deir Hafer and Maskanah in the eastern Aleppo countryside to address the evolving situation.

Reports indicate that since Tuesday, SDF forces have carried out shelling targeting residential areas, civilian infrastructure, and Syrian Army positions in Aleppo. Official figures state that these attacks resulted in 24 fatalities, nearly 130 injuries, and the displacement of approximately 165,000 people from the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods.

Earlier this year, in March 2025, the Syrian presidency announced an agreement aimed at integrating the SDF into state institutions, reiterating Syria’s territorial integrity and rejecting any form of partition.

The following month, authorities reached another understanding with the SDF regarding the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh districts. Under that agreement, both areas were recognized as administrative parts of Aleppo city, while provisions were included to respect their local specificities.
