UN expresses serious concern over increasing tensions between US, Iran
Responding to questions about recent remarks by US President Donald Trump encouraging Iranian demonstrators to persist and suggesting that assistance was forthcoming, a UN spokesperson said the organization is closely watching developments with concern. Speaking at a briefing, Stephane Dujarric said the UN was, "of course, very concerned about the increase of military-like rhetoric that we're seeing around the Iranian situation."
He stressed that diplomatic engagement, rather than threats or confrontational language, should remain the priority for all governments. "It is imperative that all member states push for diplomacy, as opposed to military rhetoric," he added.
Dujarric also addressed questions about the UN’s operational presence in Iran, saying there are currently no plans to withdraw staff from the country. In a subsequent written statement, he noted that the organization has dozens of international employees alongside several hundred Iranian nationals working on the ground.
Iran has experienced widespread demonstrations in recent weeks, driven largely by economic hardship and the sharp decline of its national currency. The unrest has at times turned violent, with reports indicating multiple fatalities, including both protesters and members of the security forces, in various parts of the country.
