US Envoy Says Trump Oversees Iran Decisions, Backs Diplomatic Efforts
"President Trump ... holds all the decisions, but he's willing to give real diplomacy a chance to solve this peacefully," Whitaker told reporters as indirect nuclear talks wrapped up in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ambassador stressed that the US remains resolute on its position, stating that Trump "has been very clear that the number one state sponsor of terror can't have nuclear weapons or the capacity to build them."
Whitaker also recalled prior military action, noting that the US president "obliterated their program once with Operation Midnight Hammer," referring to the June 2025 strikes against Iran’s key nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
He warned that further military options remain on the table, with a significant US naval presence already in the region, including the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group and plans to send the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier.
"If diplomacy doesn't work out, as he (Trump) said, 'It will be a very bad day for Iran,'" the ambassador added.
The second round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US concluded in Geneva on Tuesday. Both sides exchanged positions on nuclear, legal, and economic issues via intermediaries, meeting separately with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi at the Omani Embassy before communicating through the Omani mediation channel.
